Bidding “Times the Money” on Lots with a Quantity Greater Than One
What Is Times-the-Money Bidding?
With Times-the-Money bidding, the bid amount is multiplied by the quantity in the lot. For example, a $20 bid on a lot with 5 items results in a total of $100 ($20 x 5 items).
Where to Set This Up
In the navigator, choose Upload Auction to HiBid, then click the Bidding navigation button on the left side. This opens the Bidding panel.
In the Bid Options tab, check the box next to Bidding is Times the Money on Lots with a Quantity Greater Than One.
In the same panel, click the Bid Increments tab, and check the box next to Apply Bid Increments by Each.
How Quantities Affect Lot Display
The way a lot’s quantity displays to bidders depends on how it’s set up during upload:
If quantities are entered and “Times the Money” is checked, the lot will display as the bid amount times the quantity, without showing the calculated total. For example, in the listing below, the lot shows $34.00 USD x 20 and a current bid of $34.50 USD x 20, rather than displaying the full calculated total ($690.00):
If quantities are entered on a lot but “Times the Money” is not checked, by default the system will still multiply the bid by the quantity, but will calculate and display the total as one single price for the bidder, rather than showing the per-unit amount. For example, this lot has a quantity of 10 and a starting bid of $1, but since “Times the Money” was not checked, it displays as a total starting bid of $10.00 USD, rather than showing “$1.00 x 10”:
Apply Increments by Each
Whether this box is checked determines how a bid increment is applied on a Times-the-Money lot:
If “Apply Increments by Each” is not checked, the bid increment is spread across the total lot quantity. For example, if a lot has a quantity of 10 and the increment is $1, the $1 increment is divided evenly across all 10 items, so each individual item only increases by $0.10.
If “Apply Increments by Each” is checked, the full increment is applied to each individual item in the quantity. Using the same example, each item increases by the full $1, raising the overall lot total by $10.
If You Don’t Want the System to Multiply Automatically
Quantities greater than 1 will always trigger the start bid to be multiplied by the quantity. If you’d prefer bidders see a single straightforward price with no multiplication happening behind the scenes, the simplest option is to remove the quantities on those lots altogether (set the quantity to 1), rather than leaving a quantity greater than 1 in place.
