Credit Card Authorizations Explained

Understand how bidder credit card validations work and why totals may differ from registrations.

Updated over 3 weeks ago

What Are CC Authorizations?

During bidder registration, HiBid attempts a $1 credit card authorization to validate the bidder’s card on file. This helps reduce fraud and ensures buyer legitimacy.

  • Each authorization costs $1 per bidder, capped at $50 per auction

  • Authorizations are typically required unless the bidder was recently validated

Why You May See Fewer Authorizations than Registrations

It's common to see more registrations than successful card validations. This can happen when:

  • A bidder was already validated in a recent or compatible auction

  • The bidder’s card meets existing validation criteria (e.g., card type, time since last validation)

Example:

  • 50 total bidder registrations

  • 46 credit card authorizations

  • 4 bidders were previously validated through other auctions and did not trigger a new charge

Validation Settings

Card validation requirements can be adjusted in your HiBid account settings, including:

  • Which card types are accepted

  • How often a card must be re-validated

  • Whether validation is required on every auction
