Adding a Surcharge on a Credit Card Payment Type

How to add a surcharge or discount to a credit card payment type in Auction Flex Legacy, including the S/D Rate Applied To setting.

Auction Flex Legacy lets you add a surcharge — or a discount — to any payment type. The setting is configured per payment type inside the software, and works the same whether you process cards through your integrated Global Payments connection or collect payment outside the software entirely: the surcharge/discount is a payment-type setting, not a processor setting.

Steps

  1. Go to Miscellaneous → Maintain Settings & Options → Payments.

  2. Double-click the payment type you want to modify (or highlight it and click the edit button). Each payment type is configured independently.

  3. Enter an amount in the Sur/Disc Rate field:

    • A positive value (e.g., 3.00%) charges the customer a surcharge.

    • A negative value (e.g., -3.00%) applies a discount — for example, a cash discount.

  4. Choose whether the charge applies to the buyer or the consignor.

  5. Set the S/D Rate Applied To field — see the section below before changing this.

  6. Use the tax toggle to set whether the surcharge or discount is taxable.

  7. Click Save. Repeat for each payment type you want to configure — updating one (e.g., Visa) does not affect any other.

Understanding the S/D Rate Applied To field

This field controls which portion of the invoice your percentage is calculated against. If it's set incorrectly, the surcharge is computed on the wrong base and customer totals will be miscalculated.

For credit card surcharges, always select option #5 unless Auction Flex Support instructs otherwise. Option 5 correctly handles split payments: when a customer pays part of an invoice with a locally processed card and the rest with cash or check, the surcharge applies only to the card portion rather than the full invoice.

If your invoices show unexpected surcharge amounts after setup, this field is the first thing to check.

Global Payments integrated vs. non-Global Payments setups

This works identically whether you process the transaction through your integrated Global Payments connection or take payment outside the software. The surcharge or discount is configured at the payment-type level, not tied to how the payment is actually collected.

Please note: Surcharges are not compatible with Global Payments payment links. If you want to offset credit card processing costs while using payment links, raise your buyer's premium instead, and offer a discount for alternative payment methods such as cash and check.

Disclaimer: Surcharging is subject to rules set by the card networks (Visa, Mastercard, etc.) and by state or local law, which vary by location and can change. It's your responsibility to ensure any surcharge you apply complies with the standards set by the applicable card brands and governing bodies — Auction Flex is not responsible for compliance with those rules.
