When Your Bidder Signed Up With an Apple Relay Email (Hide My Email)

Why bidders who signed up with Apple's Hide My Email miss invites, invoices, and notifications — how to spot relay addresses in your registrations and what to tell the bidder to fix it.

What's happening

When a bidder signs up for HiBid using Sign in with Apple, Apple may create a private relay email address for them (ending in @privaterelay.appleid.com) instead of sharing their real one. This is Apple's "Hide My Email" privacy feature — but it frequently prevents auction emails from reaching the bidder: invites, invoices, outbid notices, approval emails, and password resets.

You'll recognize these bidders in your registrations by the @privaterelay.appleid.com address. If one of them says they never get your emails, this is almost certainly why.

What to tell your bidder

The fix has to happen on Apple's side. Walk them through this on their iPhone or iPad:

  1. Open the Settings app.

  2. Tap their name at the top.

  3. Tap iCloud.

  4. Scroll down and tap Hide My Email.

  5. Find and tap the HiBid.com entry.

  6. Make sure Forward To is turned ON, and that it forwards to an inbox they actually check.

Two important limitations to relay to them:

  • Accounts created through Apple cannot have their email address changed inside HiBid. This is an Apple limitation — HiBid support cannot override it.

  • If forwarding is already on and emails still don't arrive, the reliable solution is to create a new HiBid account using their regular email address.

You can send them HiBid's step-by-step bidder guide: Sign in with Apple – Missing Emails.

What you can check

  • Scan your registrations for @privaterelay.appleid.com addresses when a bidder reports missing emails — it's the first thing to rule out before troubleshooting anything else.

  • If you rely on emailing your bidder list, be aware that relay addresses may not deliver reliably even when forwarding is on.

When to contact support — and what we check

Contact us if a bidder with a relay address has enabled forwarding and is still missing emails — we can check whether messages to that address are being delivered or bouncing on our end, and help them transition to an account with a real email address if needed.
